  1. Newburgh - Newburgh's former deputy town treasurer is going to prison for 20 months.

Cindy Dunton was sentenced in a Bangor courtroom Friday morning.

Dunton pleaded guilty to stealing nearly $200,000 from the town.

On top of jail time, she'll be on probation for three years and must pay $250,000 in restitution.

  3. I'd like to see more than 20 months, but I'm honestly surprised she got that...I would've put money on it that she'd be allowed to walk, just because I have NO faith in our legal system.

Did she pay any money back today, the day of her sentencing, like the previous article had reported she said would?

Thank you to our neighbors who went to the courthouse today to represent those of us who coudln't be there.

  6. I was discussing this with a friend today who made some interesting points to think about. This person said that they didn't want to have to pay anymore than she had to for Cindy's care in prison. And that while Cindy is in prison, she won't be able to pay anything back on that $250,000.

So, just for curiosity sake, I wanted to know how much we are paying to have Cindy incarcerated for 20 months and I did a quick search of the web. I saw numbers ranging from $23,000 a year in some states to approximately $50,000 per year. Maine was mentioned specifically in one article with the statement "Maine was the most expensive (of specifically compared States in the article) at $44,379".

The following link goes to a website that breaks down what it costs for specific care that inmates are entitled to: http://www.ehow.com/about_5409377_average-cost-house-inmates-prison.html

This article talks about the cost for guards, food, medical care, facilities management, and rehabilitation costs. It summarizes that it costs approximately $129.04 per day for an inmate. Well for Cindy that comes to $77,424 for the 20 months she will be incarcerated. So she is still costing us, and the rest of the State tax payers. It will be interesting to see if she is able to get a job when she is done, and is able to pay any of it back.

  7. Don't forget about the $$ we pay to take care of her husband (Alan) who has 2 OUI's / no license is on SS & disability. Drives, has ATV's, power equipment and no problem working with all this outside the home. I'm sure she and he were with food stamps, Mainecare, oil assistance and any other programs available. But the 12+ dogs eat good I imagine. Feeling is when the town credit card (in Cindy's name) was examined and there were quite a few charges each month to Blue Seal Feed that the dogs ate good then as well. Any thought on that one?

  8. What is the value of tearing apart the community, you may not be able to put a dollar amount on it but we all know our town is worth less than it was. We will recover at some point but the wounds will be a long time healing and many may never see a community of one again.

  9. Let's start a list of what we can do to start helping to heal? What functions can we have as families to come together and enjoy?

  10. I would like to take this opportunity to Thank the ones that did attend the hearing on behalf of our community. It does show that you care where not one of the other town managers, clerks or selectmen did. Did anyone ever wonder, why? It was their community too. Now to move on, I agree. A community BBQ, picnic, or open house, I believe would be welcomed with all our new staff on hand to answer questions and provice advise and help bring our community together. How about a Newsletter too, to keep the citizens up to date on the issues, events and general town stuff? Any news on Cable coming to Newburgh ? Thank you all, Homer

  11. I know we have to let this go as it's now a done deal, but I think 20 months is no deterrent at all for anyone thinking about doing this crime in the future. Not even a full two years. I doubt she'll pay the town back and there's probably nothing we can ever do about it. She's made out just fine in the end. Probably feeling quite smug for getting away with so much. O.K. I've had my say. It stinks but time to move on.

    1. It's not the amount of jail time, or the too little amount of jail time. It's the fact the her career is ruined. Any job where she could handle cash will not happen for her...she will never be able to get a min. wage job scanning groceries. For me and millions of other people that is a deterrent enough. I am going to (hopefully) live a long time and I want myself and family to go nowhere but up with honesty and integrity. It's so sad to see that the people of Newburgh now distrust anyone...give some young buck, with a young family, just starting out a chance and you'll be surprised at what they can do and how honest they will be.

  13. Does it fry any ass that it is very likely that Cindy used our tax money to hire her lawyer to make sure she got the minimal piss ass sentence. And furthermore some of our tax dollars paid for the half ass legal representation we got. It would not bother me so bad if all the criminals were charged and thrown in jail but we got "another bad deal" for our money. I am not surprised Almy did not want to go after Alan and Nancy with his highschool level mock trial team. But he got one out of three on this one and batting .333 is pretty good average in the minor or major leagues.

Let,s hope Jesus keeps telling the coolaid drinkers they need to keep sending us money because Cindy Bulger will not ever make another payment on her own.

  14. It would "fry" you a whole lot more if you sat down with the Concerned Citizen Group and saw the proof / documentation where she was taking $$ starting in 2002 or before, and to see the calculated way she did it. Also to see the facts and proof so easily that a 5th grader would have spotted it right away, to show the select board never ever looked at the books. (It could have been stopped the first month she wrote herself a big check, if someone had looked at the books.) But they have admitted that, so that's not new news. It was in plain site, not hidden as most like to say. I believe they uncovered another $100,000 along with a town credit card and numerous other things. It would not surprise me if she got away with $500,000 or more. I believe there is a FOAA request by someone pending to research even more. The State Police investigators were given all the information, it was not included. What really burns me is the selectmen knew she'd used the credit card for personal use, they knew she never worked the number of hours she got paid for, most weeks less than 1/2 the hours, Lois Libby saw in the books the (3) false $10,000 posts made by Cindy, making like she'd made payments to the town, posts that have no $$ behind them. She chose not to tell the selectmen or that is what was told to us by Lois. Even after this was noted, Cindy continued to steal. There is so much more that the auditor did not reveal. Maybe because he was not given ALL the information from the town. Seems odd to me, when I saw the tons of information the group has, I was like WTH, why didn't they use this, it was done and given to the selectmen, no charge. If we had used a criminal lawyer instead of a real estate lawyer that Nancy Hatch provided, I think this case would have opened up a "BIG CAN OF WORMS". On the town credit card of which they were not able to get a lot of the charges, some of what they did get were from "Blue Seal Feed". What would the town keep buying at Blue Seal Feed? You think maybe because the card was in the town of Newburgh name along with Cindy Duntons name, that maybe just maybe some of what was purchased at BSF was dog food? Cindy does have 12 full size dogs. Just saying. Majority of the towns people have focused on "Cindy Dunton" stole our $$, it goes a lot deeper than that! It was not just Cindy Dunton stealing money.

  15. So she stole 200K, she has been convicted and sentenced. I still do not understand why there is not state or federal tax liability on that income, why is it not still a crime to falsify your income tax returns? Drug dealers are often convicted of tax evasion. Some poor slob working jobs under the table to support a family gets caught and they are prosecuted every time. Justice has not been served in this whole mess and it stinks. If society has to pay for Alan anyway then take away his freedom by locking him up he is guilty of fraud for his SS schemes and theft from the town at a minimum.

  16. Tell the town manager to call the sheriffs office Tuesday and report another theft by Alan Dunton, all the evidence is there already should be a slam dunk even Almays team could finish.
